Hi fellow opponauts.
Perhaps someone could explain the near universal love everyone seems to have for the 993? I just dont get it, Im sure some of it is the looks but personally I like the 964 much better while the 996 seems to fall flat in the standard trims(exclude the gt3/gt2 and turbo)
So whats the deal? And please done say "its the last air cooled Porsche" or some such nonsense.
Have a great saturday...

Personally I love the looks of all the 911's except the 996.

It's just beautiful. I love all 911's, and I think part of it was the 993 was the first really drastic change, and Porsche really styled it great. Also they are were for years cheaper and cheaper, but they've plateaued and are soon to shoot up in value.

The original 911 at its maximum evolution. The last of its kind. It's refined compared to its predecessors but raw compared to more modern 911s. Hope that helps a little.

I know this isn't the answer you wanted.. But I can't explain it, it's like when you fall in love with someone, it just happens. While I do like the 964 and my all time favourite is the 930, I still just love the 993.
One reason might be that the neunelfer finally got a 6-speed transmission, and that the new suspension made it WAY easier to drive than the previous versions, you no longer faced imminent death if you released the throttle in a corner. Perhaps it's because they revised the awd system, so that an awd 911 behaved more like the 959 i.e less understeer. I dunno mate, I just love the 993.

To add to the reasons Laird Andy McBratlie has given, the 993 was released when I was a teenager in high school. I think every Jalop holds dear the cars that were popular when they were 15 or 16. Twenty-or-so years from now, C7 'Vettes will be popular amongst 30-somethings.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It's just something about the 993.

I do like the introduction of a 6 speed, Im not sure the 964s reputation for tricky handling is really warranted however, I raced one for a while at it was not that tricky to drive. Im also not into the awd but I respect the love for the 993 whatever the reason.

I've only driven a 964 twice, it was raining both times.. So I can't say for sure, but the 993 seemed a bit more forgiving.

I remember loving the 993 Turbo in Need For Speed: High Stakes, and that is where I kind of grew my want for one. I'm not crazy about them like some others are, but I do have a special place in my heart for one. Also, I have an insane S700 tune setup for one on Forza 4 if anyone wants. I don't have Gold so I can't gift a tune, but I can provide all the specs on the tune settings. It's all grip, no aero, and it goes around a turn like you wouldn't believe. That, both my McLaren F1's (for obvious reasons) and my tuned 240z are my favorite cars to drive in that game, that I've tuned.

One of the reasons can be the fact that they are getting cheaper, so now they are obtainable for those who just skipped them before beacuse they were out of their budget. And because it's ageing, so just like any other 911 generation, it is becoming a classic, so people are going to like it more and more. I'm saying this, because this is exactly what is happening with me right now. Also, the Targa was cool with the sliding glass roof, and because GT2 madness with riveted fenders.

And I think the 993 is a rare car that looked good when new and looks better and better with time. Anytime I see one on the road it looks amazing. Now that you don't see as many of them road during daily driving they look kind of exotic. Especially the S, 4S and Turbo

I like them both. I think the 993 gets so much love because it was a bigger evolution over the classic 911 than the 964 was. The 964 kind of seems like a 993 preview to me. Porsche probably would have liked to go straight from the classic to something like the 993. But that might not have been financially feasible at the time.

There's something about the 993 that can't be explain. To me it's the first Porsche I've seen and it marked me during my childhood. The design, the interior, the noise, it was all perfect!
